Young animals need individual care

Age, size, coat and health affect warmth needs. Newborn animals and weaned youngsters need different advice, so ask a veterinarian for an age-appropriate plan.

Prepare the environment

Provide a dry resting place away from drafts and clean bedding. Dry animals after wet walks. Protect heaters from burns and chewing, and let animals move away from heat.

Watch useful health clues

Notice appetite, activity, stool, coughing, vomiting and persistent shivering. Nose moisture alone cannot diagnose fever. Contact a veterinarian for marked weakness, breathing difficulty or ongoing refusal to eat.

Keep food and outings appropriate

Use a complete diet suitable for growth and provide water. Portions, vaccination and parasite-control plans should follow individual advice.
