Do Pets Catch Colds? Understanding Respiratory Signs
Sneezing, coughing and eye or nose discharge need observation and should not automatically be called a common cold.

“A cold” is everyday language
Cats and dogs can develop respiratory infections, but similar signs have other causes. Cold weather alone does not prove a viral infection.
Watch daily impact
Record sneezing, coughing, discharge, energy and appetite changes. Respiratory illness can involve upper or lower airways.

Seek urgent help
Breathing effort, open-mouth breathing in a cat, marked weakness or collapse should not wait at home. Young, senior or chronically ill animals need individual advice.
Home care is not assessment
Provide a quiet environment and clean water. Never use human fever, cough or cold medicine or add antibiotics without advice.
