Do not treat human snacks as rewards. Check the species, ingredients and ingestion risk first.

“Do not eat” does not only mean poisonous

Some foods can cause poisoning, while others may cause stomach upset, choking or intestinal blockage. Risk depends on species, body weight, ingredients and amount eaten.

Foods dogs should avoid

Xylitol, chocolate, grapes and raisins, onions and garlic, caffeine, alcohol, raw yeast dough, macadamia nuts, heavily salted snacks, bones and fruit pits all deserve careful storage.

Cats need separate guidance

Cats should also avoid chocolate, onions, alcohol, caffeine and raw yeast dough. Milk may cause digestive upset. Do not copy canine research directly to cats.

If ingestion is suspected

Keep the packaging, ingredients and approximate time. Tell a veterinarian the species, weight and estimated amount. Do not induce vomiting, give salt water or wait for symptoms.
