Fluorescent Animals: Research Tools, Aquarium Fish and Public Imagination

Fluorescent markers are not the same as natural bioluminescence or built-in disease resistance.

Fluorescence needs suitable light

Fluorescent proteins emit visible light after excitation by a particular wavelength. That differs from bioluminescence and should not be described as an animal lighting a dark room.

Research cats are not disease-resistant pets

A 2011 Nature Methods study used fluorescent markers and antiviral-restriction technology to explore a research model. The marker helps observe gene expression; it does not give an animal immunity.

Aquarium fish cannot be generalised

Risk-reviewed examples of genetically modified fluorescent ornamental fish do not establish that all modified animals can be sold, bred or imported elsewhere.

Ask about welfare and environment

Consider health, breeding, care, escape and environmental effects, as well as local rules. Check current regulations against reliable sources.
